Our energy team has reason to celebrate after completing a major project for National Grid Grain LNG, a key player in the UK’s energy infrastructure.
Through working with Grain LNG to navigate a complex bidding process for new capacity at the site on the Thames Estuary, the team, led by Andrew Whitehead, our head of energy, has helped secured the future of the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Europe.

For over a year, we have assisted Grain LNG in the development of new legal frameworks, supporting commercial access arrangements underpinning a substantial capital investment.
Andrew Whitehead, our senior partner, said: “The resulting investment at Grain LNG will significantly improve the UK’s position as a leading gas hub. This project has been several years in the making and the nature of the work required close collaboration across the legal, regulatory, commercial and technical spheres.”
Following a competitive tender process, the additional capacity in the terminal was awarded to Qatar Petroleum, which joins a wide range of other important names in the energy sector, including Centrica, Pavilion Energy and Total.
Nicola Duffin, head of commercial at Grain LNG, said: “This is a key milestone for us and we were extremely pleased to announce Qatar Petroleum as the successful bidder for the new capacity at Grain.
“With the help of Shakespeare Martineau, we are confident that we have created a service that is beneficial to all involved, offering flexibility and meeting market needs.”
Andrew Whitehead added: “It’s a busy time for the UK’s energy sector, with Brexit on the horizon and the imminent publication of the Government’s long-awaited Energy White Paper. The awarding of this important contract to Qatar Petroleum is a great illustration of the importance of the UK as a hub at the centre of the European and global energy ecosystem.”
