About This Webinar
20 July 2022 - 14:30 – 15:15
The significant (and rising) cost of continued membership of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme remains firmly on the agenda for many governing bodies of independent schools.
One in four independent schools in the UK has now either left, or is set to leave, the TPS following the 43% increase in the employer’s contribution rates which took place with effect from September 2019. A cost which many independent schools at that time could not afford, and, following the impact of Covid-19 on the economy, even more schools are now feeling the pressure.
It is widely expected that a further rise in contribution rates for the TPS will be announced in the findings of the 2020 actuarial review (which is currently underway) with rumours in the sector suggesting an increase to as much as 30% of pensionable salary with effect from April 2024; a cost that is likely to raise challenges for many schools.
In this joint webinar with Succession Wealth, we will provide independent schools with the tools they need to navigate this issue. We will highlight the strategic decisions that school leaders, governing bodies and trustees should be considering over the next 12 months, the various options available, and some of the typical challenges that schools could face.
If you wish to put your questions forward in advance, please email these to events@shma.co.uk

How can employers reduce the risk of damage to their reputation?
If an employee's conduct outside of the workplace potentially damages a company's reputation, then the employee can be said to be bringing the company into disrepute. Which in turn may give the employer legal cause to take disciplinary action.
In this webinar, Mike Hibbs – Partner and Robin Gronbech - Solicitor in our Employment team will discuss the key employment law considerations and potential pitfalls. We will cover:
-
Legal framework – unfair dismissal
-
When does employee’s conduct outside of work become relevant to their employer?
-
What should employers do if an employee is suspected of bringing the employer into disrepute?
-
Policies, procedures, and planning your investigation
This is a live event and there will be an opportunity for questions and answers on the day; if you wish, you may also forward your questions in advance to events@shma.co.uk.

About This Webinar
Wednesday 09 March, 09:30 - 10:15
Research commissioned by Health & Her indicated that the UK could be losing fourteen million workdays a year as a result of the menopause. Menopause, while being a natural stage of life experienced by most women, remains a taboo subject in many workplaces.
There has been increasing scrutiny of workplace practices around Menopause and recent data has shown the number of Employment Tribunal decisions citing menopause as a relevant factor has tripled over the last three years. On 23 July 2021, the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee opened an inquiry into the impact of the menopause in the workplace.
The evidence highlights that it is time for employers to open their menopause dialogue with their employees and consider any steps they could take to make their workforce more inclusive. In this webinar, we looked at:
-
The impact of the menopause on those working who experience it
-
The existing discrimination legislation and workplace practices to see what employers could and should be doing to lessen the impact on employees
-
The potential adverse consequences of failing to do so and how getting it right can aid retention (almost 900,000 women left their jobs over an unidentified period of time because of menopause symptoms)
Our Speakers

We’re offering a fixed fee menopause policy drafting service. For a fixed price of £950 plus VAT*, our team of experts will prepare a bespoke menopause policy for your business. This includes:

About This Webinar
Tuesday 8 February 2022, 09:30 – 10:00
Recently, the Supreme Court rejected a £3bn claim against Google. The landmark decision means individuals are unable to claim compensation under data protection legislation simply because their rights have been infringed. Instead, victims will have to show distress or financial loss as a result of a breach.
For businesses, the judgment in Lloyd v Google will come as an enormous relief. But what does this mean for education institutions across the UK when dealing with individuals’ claims?
In this webinar, we considered how the case has impacted the landscape of data protection claims and how the Court’s current approach to data protection cases impacts education institutions. In particular, we looked at:
-
Remedies are available to individuals who are considering bringing a data protection claim against an institution
-
How can an individual claim damages for breach of their data protection rights and how much will those damages be?
-
The impact of Lloyd v Google on the likelihood of an individual being successful in a data protection claim; and
-
What other recent Court decisions say about an individual’s right to recover damages for breach of data protection and how this may impact clients in the education sector
Our speakers were Geraldine Swanton and Catherine Savage, data protection and contentious data protection specialists respectively who work with educational institutions and businesses across the UK.

About This Webinar
Thursday 16 September 2020, 9:30 - 10:15 BST
The extended Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (the furlough scheme) comes to an end on 30 September 2021. Throughout the pandemic, the scheme has been a lifeline for many businesses and as we get closer to its discontinuation, many employers have indicated that their businesses are yet to return to pre-pandemic levels of profitability. If trading conditions have not improved, this possibly spells redundancies and insolvencies. It is vital for businesses to prepare now for life after furlough.
Our legal experts Jon Heuvel and Nicola Holton will look at the following:
-
Restructuring staffing requirements
-
Alternative options to redundancy; changes to terms of employment, redeployment, sabbaticals and secondments
-
Redundancy
-
Practical steps you can take when insolvency is a possibility
-
Director's duties
-
Formal insolvency procedures

With life getting back to ‘normal’, students are set to return back to universities in September and with COVID-19 still around, the education sector may be a breeding ground for coronavirus outbreaks. It is important that universities have the relevant health and safety measures in place to protect the health, safety and welfare of its students and staff.
In this webinar, our partner Rav Johal looked into how higher education institutions can prevent any claims against them.
-
The law/regulations that apply to Covid-19 claims
-
How could they prevent a claim and what to do if a claim arises?
-
Mental health issues associated with Covid-19
-
How to defend a claim
-
What are the risks to a university?

As the furlough scheme finally winds down after nearly 18 months – and on the assumption that there won’t be any last minute extensions this time around – employers with staff still furloughed will need to be thinking about what happens next.
Whilst there is optimism for the future, where a business is not expected to bounce back, that might mean redundancies. In this webinar, Tom and Esther consider an employer’s obligations when carrying out a redundancy exercise. In particular, they discussed:

As the life expectancy and retirement age increases, so does the span of ages in the workplace.
With greater technology and fast-paced lives, it’s thought that priorities, mindset and cultural differences between generations are shifting quicker than ever. So, with workplaces likely to employ boomers through to Gen Z, how do you cater for the needs of different generations? Is it a reality that millennials need constant praise and feedback and that boomers will be resistant to change, or is this just a stereotype?
In this episode of SHMA Talks, our CEO Sarah Walker-Smith is in conversation with Henrietta Brealey – CEO of the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Ninder Johal - CEO of Nachural Group, business leaders who manage, motivate and support teams of all ages, both older and younger than themselves. How do they do it and what is the best practice for managing a workforce of up to five generations?

Collaborations to develop new IP are becoming more prevalent across many sectors, so it’s important to know how to best protect your interests.
In a world where businesses are becoming increasingly specialised in developing technology or creating powerful brands, new opportunities for growth may require working with another entity to jointly design and test new solutions. From the beginning of any collaboration, it is important to consider what IP each party will bring to the table and how new IP will be owned and licensed. Getting IP right can make the difference between a lucrative partnership or an investment flop.
During this webinar, Kerry discussed:

The new relationship between the EU and UK took effect on 1 January 2021, with changes to UK Intellectual Property law to implement the UK’s departure from EU IP systems and ensure that owners of EU rights benefit from equivalent protection in the UK.
Now six months on, Mauro Paiano and Daniel Goodall provided an update on the position and covered the below topics:

On 1 January next year, a UK version of the GDPR will replace the current general data protection regulation. The UK will become a “third country” for the purposes of cross-border transfers of personal data from the European Economic Area. On top of this, the effectiveness of the safeguards provided by the Standard Contractual Clauses, which have up to now been the way most UK businesses have ensured transfers of personal data to the US and elsewhere were lawful, has recently been cast into doubt by the European Court’s Schrems II decision.
This webinar explores:
- What will change for businesses that need to transfer personal data into or out of the UK or process the personal data of EEA customers, employees and others
- What these changes mean and what practical steps businesses should be taking to ensure personal data can keep flowing lawfully.
