About This Guide
Our guide to shared parental leave (SPL) discusses who is entitled to take time off work for childcare reasons. In addition, the guide explains how shared parental leave works, including pay and day off entitlement, when you can take it and if both parents can take it simultaneously. Also, our guide includes information about sharing the untaken leave with the other parent as SPL and return to work practices. As an employer, there are some aspects to consider when handling SPL requests and entitlements; for example, the employee has to notify the employer of their intention of taking shared parental leave, evidence that the employer might request to approve and finalise the employee’s request and lastly, cases that the employer can refuse shared parental leave.
