UCU vote for strike action: questions universities and colleges should be considering

In view of the proposed industrial action by UCU, we provide a refresher on the rules governing industrial action.

The University and College Union (UCU) has recently voted for industrial action as a result of what they see as an “insulting” pay offer from the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA).

UCU has announced that its members will strike on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 May. It has also announced staff will “work to contract” from 25 May (e.g. staff will not work overtime or undertake voluntary duties such as covering for absent colleagues). Clearly this could be severely disruptive at a crucial period in the academic calendar.
