Shakespeare Martineau strengthens education offering with senior hire
Law firm Shakespeare Martineau has appointed a director of strategy and policy advice for education to bolster support for the sector.
In the latest of a series of non-legal hires, Dr Jonathan Nicholls joins the firm following a nine year tenure as Registrary at the University of Cambridge. In his new role, Jonathan will work closely with Shakespeare Martineau’s existing specialist education team to offer institutions strategic project management and policy advice as well as to help them develop new business streams.
Jonathan’s in-depth understanding of the sector both in the UK and internationally stems from a long career in academic administration. After graduating with a PhD from Cambridge, Dr Nicholls undertook a scholarship at Harvard and worked within the university administration, including as Registrar, at Warwick for 21 years, before being appointed Registrar and Secretary at the University of Birmingham in 2003.
Andy Raynor, CEO of Shakespeare Martineau, said: “Jonathan’s appointment is a significant development in the growth of the firm. His well-known status within the education sector, combined with his wealth of experience working within the very type of organisations he will be advising, will be hugely beneficial for both new and existing clients.
“Providing strategic business solutions that are grounded in top-class legal rigour will ensure that Shakespeare Martineau remains the first port of call for our clients whatever their challenges.”
Jonathan’s appointment as a non-lawyer marks a move by the firm to complement existing legal service offerings. Focusing on the education sector, it is hoped that the approach can then be extended to other sectors, applying a similar business model of consultancy and strategic advice. Positioning the firm as a more ‘holistic’ business partner which is able to address a variety of sector-wide challenges, will be a priority for Jonathan.
Commenting on his appointment at the firm, Jonathan said:.
“The chance to combine my existing experience with the legal expertise and sector focus of the team at the firm is something that I am very much looking forward to. It is my hope that by working within the context of longstanding client relationships, we can develop the offering to add commercial and strategic value to the already superior legal efforts of the firm.”
